Episode One – You Never Lose Your Dancing Shoes. LINK TO BROADCAST ON BBC Radio Cambs HERE

Pam, Steve, Dennis and Jane were in their teens when they met in the 1970’s, a decade of strikes, Stylophones, and Space Hoppers.  And Northern Soul.

Still friends in 2021, with time on their hands, they’re drawn back to old photographs, old records, and old memories. Granny sandals from the Kaye’s catalogue.  Ice creams at Sunny Hunny.   Come to that, what were they doing in Sunny Hunny, and how did they get there?

As they piece together the memories, they know that their lives have been made better by the fellowship of Northern Soul.    Because once a Soulie, always a Soulie.

But what’s an all-nighter?  Could they organise one themselves?  Maybe, if they can get the a responsible adult on side.

Then, almost overnight, it seems, Peterborough is on the Northern Soul map, and what they’re looking for is right on their doorstep, at the Wirrina.

Any Soulie worth the name, has been to Wigan Casino.  If only to say they had been,

But how to get membership?  And how to find transport?  Russ Winstanley’s magazine provided the first solution, and Johnny Carol’s Cortina will get them there.   If you go on a trip with Johnny, anything can happen, including meeting the whole  Manchester United First Team.

Will they make it to Wigan?  Does the Casino live up to its reputation?  For the friends it’s going to be a night they will always remember.

When you’re in your teens the further you venture from home, the more you get to learn about the world, and yourself.  Unexpected friends can come into your life.  Choices have to be made.

Lessons are also learned, like if you stand on the side of a road and stick out your thumb, almost anything can, nearly, happen.

As the friends look back, they can’t help but wonder how they ever managed to emerge unscathed and in one piece.
