Cypher

In dance, particularly within hip-hop and breaking (breakdancing), a "cypher" refers to a circle formed by dancers where they take turns improvising and dancing in the centre. It's a space for free expression, freestyle movement, and sometimes friendly competition.
In Peterborough we have a thriving dance community and an incredible spoken word community so we wanted to see what would happen if they came together… This collection of bold and experimental short films is the creative outcome.
Over a period of intensive workshops in August 2024 these artists came together to explore the intersections between language and dance, testing boundaries, challenging form, and discovering new ways to communicate through the synergy of voice and body.
Rather than polished performances, these films intentionally capture works in progress. The result is a series of dynamic, emotionally resonant pieces that reflect the energy of the collaborative process.
The radical joy that exists when we dance, the very vibrant spoken word community. We wanted to see what would happen when they get together.
